Veneers are thin shells of tooth-colored material that are placed on the surface of teeth to improve their appearance. Veneers can be used for teeth that are chipped, cracked or stained, and they also may be used to correct gaps, improve the appearance of worn enamel and help teeth appear straighter and better aligned. Veneers may be made of porcelain or composite materials, colored to look like your own natural teeth.
The first step in applying veneers is to decide on the proper shape, size and color for your restoration. Your dentist can make an impression of your teeth to ensure the veneer will fit and will match the size and shape of surrounding teeth. Before your veneer is placed, your tooth surface will be shaped so it can accommodate the veneer. That typically means removing small layers of tooth material to “make room” for the veneer. A special dental adhesive is used to adhere the veneer to the tooth's surface. Once in place, Dr. Follette may perform additional minor shaping or polishing. If your veneer is being made in a lab, you may be given a temporary veneer to wear until the permanent one is ready for placement.
If you have teeth that are worn, stained, cracked or broken, or you have a gap or slight unevenness, veneers could be the ideal choice for you. Veneers also play a major part in “smile design” procedures, where multiple treatments and procedures can be sued to create a beautiful, healthy-looking smile. During your consultation, Dr. Follette will talk to you about all your options so you can make the best decision for your needs and your goals.
