Signs And Symptoms

A canker sore is simply a lesion that develops on your oral tissues. They can form under your tongue, on the inside of your cheek, and even on the soft palate of your mouth. Canker sores look like small bumps or pimples. They are white or yellow, and they can be red around their edges.

An irritated canker sore will look increasingly inflamed, and it may even break open and weep fluid. It is especially important to keep the area around your sore clean for this reason.

It’s not uncommon for the tissue around your canker sore to feel tingly or warm. Pay attention to these sensations as they are often the first indication that a canker sore is developing at all.

Root Causes

While cold sores are caused by HSV-1, and easily transmissible, canker sores develop due to injury to oral tissues. This means that they are not contagious. Some patients report higher rates of canker sore development during times of stress or hormone fluctuations.

Treatment Options

Most canker sores will heal on their own about a week or two after development. It is important to keep your mouth clean during this time period in order to minimize your risk of developing a secondary infection. Do not brush the area around your canker sore too aggressively, as this can further damage your mouth.

There are also over-the-counter products available to minimize discomfort during the healing period. You want to seek out formulations that include:

  • Benzocaine
  • Fluocinonide
  • Hydrogen Peroxide

As we’ve mentioned, most canker sores resolve on their own. However, in the result that your canker sore is not getting better, your dentist may be able to recommend some prescription treatments, including steroids, to facilitate healing.
