Keep reading to get answers to some common questions about sedation…

Q: What do you mean by “sedation dentistry?”

A: As a dental patient today you have more options than ever before when it comes to relaxation and sedation treatments in the dentist’s chair. Nitrous oxide sedation—commonly referred to as ‘laughing gas’—for example, is inhaled through a special face mask. Once you inhale the nitrous oxide, you will start to feel calm and maybe even a little giggly. Oral conscious sedation, on the other hand, involves taking a small pill before you even come in for your appointment. This sedation option delivers calming benefits and has amnesic effects.

Q: I’ve heard that sedation dentistry is called “sleep dentistry.” But I don’t want to be unconscious. What can I do?
A: You are right that many people use the term “sleep dentistry” to refer to dental sedation—however, this characterization is a bit of a misnomer. Using nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation you will never actually be unconscious. These treatments are not the same as being under general anesthesia for major surgery, for example. You’ll find that the sedation treatments we utilize are much gentler on your body than sedatives that render you unconscious.
